While serving on an assignment in Afghanistan on October 23, 2010, Marine Cpl. Juan Dominguez landed on a buried bomb after slipping down an embankment and lost both of his legs and his right arm in an explosion.

The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation and its partner, the Gary Sinise Foundation, have donated a new “smart home” for him to share with his wife, Alexis, and his 9-year-old daughter, Victoria. On September 11, 2012 Dominguez received the keys to this life changing home.

As a triple amputee, the home automation systems in this home are important in helping Juan be independent in his home.  Smart Systems Technologies pulled from their 13 years of experience in Southern California smart home design, and created an incredible home automation system for this American hero.

It all starts at the entry of this Southern California Smart Home:  When the Dominguez family arrives home they use a security key fob on a key ring to disarm, arm, and auto open doors.  This eliminates the hassle of manually unlocking and opening the doors, which can be a difficult task when wheelchair bound.  Most of the home automation systems in the home are controlled by using an Ipad or iPhone.  While the entry system can also be controlled in this manner, the key fob makes it much simpler.

Inside the home, the home automation systems control the Window Shades, Lighting, Audio, TV, Music, Entry exit doors, Security, and cameras to view the front and back door.  With the touch of a button the door can be unlocked and opened welcoming guests into the home.  While many of these smart home systems are a welcome addition to any homes, they are a necessity for a wounded war veteran like Juan Dominguez.

The kitchen is equipped with cabinets that can lower with the iPad/iPhone button press as well.  From his wheelchair, Juan can reach contents of all cabinets, providing him with the independence many of us take for granted.
